Connecting the Hope Diamond to the French Blue

Today, we are confident that the Hope was cut from the French Blue following its theft from the Garde-Meuble in 1792. Two key pieces of evidence connecting the French Blue and the Hope include:

  • The Hope Diamond first surfaced in its current form in 1812, just two days after the statute of limitations on crimes committed during the French Revolution expired. This new diamond had no history prior to that time (Post and Farges 2014).
  • A lead cast of the French Blue Diamond was discovered at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris in 2007. Computer modeling studies based on the dimensions of the cast showed that the Hope Diamond could have been cut from the French Blue (Farges et al. 2009).
