Izalco Volcano

Routine determinations of ferrous iron in bulk samples is done by using the micro-colorimetric method (Christie et al., 1986) modified from Wilson (1960). Samples are digested in HF and the determination is made on the resulting solutions using the Varian Cary 50 UV-Vis spectrophotometer shown above.

Preparation of olivine and other melt inclusion host minerals is done by heavy liquid separation and subsequent treatment in fluorboric acid. Crystals are then examined for melt inclusions and selected for wafering for FTIR determination of volatiles.
