Izalco Volcano

The Volcanic Glass file (13 MB) of the Smithsonian Institution contains over 10,000 natural glasses from the sea floor analyzed by electron microprobe in the Department of Mineral Sciences. Analytical procedures were developed in the early 1970s by Gene Jarosewich and William Melson. Tim O'Hearn began analyzing specimens in 1976 and refined these procedures. The sea floor glasses are from mid-ocean ridge spreading centers, fracture zones, seamounts, back-arc basins, and trenches from around the globe. The majority of the speimens for this collection were donated to the Petrology Collection and analyzed by the electron microprobe with the understanding that the analyses were given to the donor for their privileged use for a year, then merged into our database.
