High Pressure Laboratory
The high pressure laboratory is equipped with:
PISTON CYLINDER
- A Rockland Research 150 ton end-loaded piston-cylinder press. ½ and ¾ inch pressure vessels capable of accessing the pressures of Earth’s upper mantle (up to ~ 4 gigapascals) and temperatures up to 2400°C.
- Assembly processing equipment such as isomet saw, drill press, Dremel, lathe.
DIAMOND ANVIL CELL
- Four symmetric Diamond Anvil Cells (DAC). Capable of accessing the pressures of Earth’s core (> 1 Megabar) and, with laser-heating (off-site), temperatures of several thousand Kelvin. Additional DACs are available through an agreement with the Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington.
- Mico-EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) by Hylozoic Products. For machining very small (10-1000 micron) holes in the metal gaskets used in DAC experiments.
- Ruby florescence system (for measuring the pressure generated by the DAC).
- Olympus SZX16 Stereo Microscope fully equipped with excellent illumination and high-magnification / long working-distance capability.
- Micro-manipulator for DAC loading (high precision remote control of cell and needle used for loading under high magnification).
GENERAL
- Deltech DT-31-FL-8 1700ºC Front Loading Laboratory Furnace.
- PUK3 pro plus with mezzo microscope and PUK argon gas regulator. The microscope has a shutter that protects your eyes from the welding flash. Argon gas is used to shield the weld from an oxygen rich environment. The argon is fed through the welding piece itself. See it in action.
- 1 atmosphere gas mixing furnaces and hydrothermal lab.
MULTI-ANVIL
- We have an access agreement with the Geophysical Laboratory for use of the multi-anvils there.
